Before your driving test, preparation starts with more than practicing turns, stops, and lane changes. You also need the right documents, a safe vehicle, and a clear understanding of what the examiner will check before the test begins. Here’s what Colorado drivers should bring, what to double-check, and what to leave at home before heading to a third-party drive test or a DMV license appointment.
Quick Answer: What You Need to Bring to Your Driver’s Test
For an Anshor drive test, bring a valid permit; pictures of the permit are not allowed, but the MyColorado app may be used as proof of your permit. Missing a required item can delay or prevent your drive test or license appointment. If you can’t prove your identity or date of birth with standard documents, the DMV may refer you to Exceptions Processing, but that can delay your license appointment. Getting the list right before you show up helps you avoid a wasted trip and a wasted afternoon. If you need a driver’s license or permit replacement, check Colorado DMV replacement instructions before test day so you’re not trying to solve a credential issue at the window.
The Required Documents
Most people know they need “some ID.” Here’s what that actually means at a Colorado DMV.
Proof of Identity
Colorado DMV identity-document requirements vary by applicant type, and some applicants may need one approved identity document while others may need one List A document paired with one List B document. Accepted documents depend on applicant category; for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, examples include an unexpired U.S. passport or passport card, an unexpired permanent resident card, or a certified U.S. birth certificate paired with another approved document when required. A school ID doesn’t count, even if it has a photo.
If your name appears differently across documents (a maiden name, a hyphen, a middle name on one but not another), bring the paperwork that explains the difference. For U.S. citizens and permanent residents, a certified marriage certificate, certified U.S. divorce decree showing the name change, certified U.S. court order of name change, or U.S. adoption order can connect name differences; temporarily lawful or Colorado Standard credential applicants should follow the DMV’s category-specific name-document rules. The DMV will flag any mismatch and may not proceed without a supporting document.
Proof of Colorado Residency
U.S. citizens and permanent residents applying for a first-time Colorado credential generally need two proof-of-address documents, while Colorado Standard credential applicants are instructed to bring one proof of current Colorado address. Acceptable options include utility bills, bank statements, a lease or mortgage agreement, a pay stub, or a vehicle registration. Phone bills qualify if they show your full legal name and current address.
If two proof-of-address documents are required, both should show your current physical Colorado address. Printed digital statements downloaded from an online banking or utility portal are generally accepted. If you recently moved and your documents are not yet updated, sort that out before you schedule your test appointment. The same goes for drivers license renewal questions, address updates, or other DMV paperwork that could slow down your appointment.
Social Security Verification
You must provide your Social Security number; you can present an acceptable document or provide it verbally, and the DMV will verify it through the Social Security Administration. Acceptable proof includes a Social Security card, W-2, SSA-1099, Non-SSA-1099, or a pay stub with the applicant’s name and SSN, and Colorado also allows eligible applicants to provide the number verbally. A card stamped “NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT” is still valid for DMV purposes. You don’t need a pristine card. You need the number verified.
Your Learner’s Permit
Bring your valid permit, or use the MyColorado app as proof of your permit; pictures of your permit are not accepted. For drivers under 18, this is often called a teen permit, and the examiner will check the issue date before the test begins. In Colorado, applicants under 18 must hold their learner’s permit for a minimum of 12 months before taking the road test. If your permit has expired, renew it before scheduling. If you also need a driver’s license replacement or have another credential issue, handle that before your drive test or DMV license appointment.
If You’re Using Your Own Vehicle
At Anshor Driving School, students use the company vehicle for the drive test; if you test with another approved provider, ask whether you need to bring your own vehicle. If your testing provider allows or requires you to use your own vehicle, ask ahead of time what insurance, registration, and safety-check requirements apply.
Bring:
- Current proof of insurance, if your testing provider allows or requires you to use your own vehicle.
- Current vehicle registration, if your testing provider allows or requires you to use your own vehicle.
If you test with a provider that requires you to bring your own vehicle, that vehicle must meet the provider’s safety requirements. For an Anshor drive test, students use Anshor’s company vehicle.
All of these need to work:
- Headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals
- Windshield wipers and washers
- Horn
- Mirrors (present and adjustable)
- Windshield (no cracks that block the driver’s line of sight)
If a testing provider allows or requires your own vehicle, a failed safety check may prevent the test from starting; at Anshor, students use the company vehicle. This isn’t an edge case. It happens more than people expect.
What Examiners Check Before You Pull Out
Here’s what many DMV preparation checklists don’t include. Before you ever enter traffic, the examiner will ask you to demonstrate vehicle controls from the driver’s seat. One of the most useful driving tips for test day is simple, know the vehicle before you arrive.
Expect to show:
- Left and right turn signals
- Hazard lights
- Windshield wipers and washers
- Horn
- Headlights and high beams
- Front and rear defroster
They will also confirm your mirrors are properly adjusted before you go anywhere. If you have to search for the wiper switch or you’re not sure where the hazard button is, the examiner will notice immediately. Know every control before test day. Not approximately. Exactly.
A Note for Minors
If you’re under 18, a parent, guardian, or responsible adult 21 or older with the required credentials must sign the DR 2460 Affidavit of Liability, either at the appointment or before the appointment with notarization. You’ll also need to show proof of completed supervised practice driving hours. Colorado requires 50 total hours, 10 of which must be nighttime hours. These hours must be logged before you apply for your minor driver’s license at the DMV.
Adults 18 and over don’t need the minor supervised driving log or Affidavit of Liability requirement. The identification documents are the same.
Common Things People Forget
In 30-plus years of working with Colorado driving students, a few items come up repeatedly:
- The second residency document, if your DMV license appointment requires two proofs of Colorado address. People bring one, not two.
- A permit that expired a few weeks ago. Check the date before you schedule.
- If you’re testing somewhere that requires your own vehicle, check for issues like a burned-out brake light before test day. Do a walk-around the day before.
- For an Anshor drive test, the required item is proof of your valid permit, either through the permit itself or the MyColorado app.
None of these is a dramatic failure. They’re just preventable ones.
What to Leave at Home
- Your phone in your hand. Keep it in your bag or the glove compartment. Visible phone equals distraction, and distraction is what the examiner is watching for.
- Extra passengers. You and the examiner. That’s it. No parents or friends in the backseat.
- A test-day setup you’re not comfortable with. If you’re testing in a vehicle you don’t usually drive, take time before test day to understand the basic controls so you feel prepared.
