The Basics of Teen Driving Training

What is a Teen Driver’s Ed Program?

Driver’s education for teens is a structured program that teaches new drivers the knowledge, judgment, and behind-the-wheel skills they need to drive safely on Colorado roads. Students can choose between a 30-hour, state-certified driver’s education course offered either in person or online. During the course, they’ll learn Colorado traffic laws and regulations, road signs and signals, the responsibilities and privileges of driving, and the basics of vehicle safety and operation.

Students who are within 30 days of their 15th birthday or older can take their written permit test after completing the required 30 hours of instruction and, upon passing, receive their instruction permit. From there, they can begin behind-the-wheel training and must complete at least six hours of instruction with a state-certified driving academy, like Anshor Driving School.

The Process of Getting Your Driver’s License as a Teen

From Learner’s Permit to Driver’s License

The requirements for teen driver’s education and licensing vary depending on your age:

30-Hour In-Person Driver's Education Course

Complete the required 30 hours of state-certified classroom instruction and finish with your written permit test.

30-Hour Online Driver’s Education Course

Complete the classroom portion of driver’s education online through a state-approved AAA course. This flexible option allows students to work through the required instruction from home and at their own pace.

4-Hour In-Person Driver Awareness Course

This state-accredited course is designed for Colorado drivers ages 18 to 21 who qualify to complete a four-hour driver awareness program instead of a full 30-hour driver’s education course.

Required Behind-the-Wheel Driving Lessons

Complete the state-required six hours of behind-the-wheel training with a certified driving instructor. During these one-on-one lessons, students gain hands-on experience navigating Colorado roads while building the skills and confidence needed to earn their driver’s license.

Private Driving Lessons

Is driver's education required in Colorado?

Yes! In Colorado, teens between the ages of 15 and 17 are required to complete a state-approved 30-hour driver’s education course before obtaining an instruction permit. Drivers ages 18 to 20 must complete either the same 30-hour course or a state-approved 4-hour driver awareness program.

What age do you have to be to start driver's education?

Under Colorado’s driver education requirements, students can begin a state-approved driver’s education course at 14 years and 6 months. They may take their written permit test at 14 years and 11 months and can receive their instruction permit once they turn 15 years old.

Does my teen need a permit before their first driving lesson?

Yes, a valid permit or license is required to book driving lessons. If your teen doesn’t have one yet, we’re happy to point you toward the right next steps to get one.

How many driving lessons does my teen need?

For many Colorado teens, six hours of behind-the-wheel training with a state-approved driving school is required to earn a driver’s license. However, if your teen will be 16 and a half years old or older when they apply for their license, this requirement is optional. Drivers ages 18 and younger must also complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including 10 hours of nighttime driving, before they can qualify for a driver’s license. If your teen would benefit from additional time behind the wheel, we also offer private driving lessons to help them build confidence and gain real-world driving experience.

Can I get my permit at 16 without teen driver's ed?

No. Beginning January 1, 2027, Colorado requires all teens ages 15 through 17 to complete a 30-hour state-approved driver’s education course before they can receive an instruction permit.

Do I need behind-the-wheel training?

If you want to get your license before you turn 16 and a half, you must complete 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training. If you wait until you are 16 and a half or older, that professional training is no longer mandatory (though you still need to log 50 hours of practice driving with an adult).

Can I upgrade my permit to a license online?

Yes, you can upgrade your permit to a driver license online as long as you have no changes to your name, address, or driving privileges, and you have passed all required driving tests.
